Diabetes Cases in the UK Reach Record High, Affecting One in Five Adults
A newly released report has revealed that more than one million adults in the UK are living with undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, adding to growing concerns about a hidden health crisis.
According to data from Diabetes UK, the number of diagnosed diabetes cases has surged to 4.6 million, up from 4.4 million last year. Additionally, an estimated 6.3 million people have prediabetes, a condition where blood sugar levels are elevated but not yet high enough for a diabetes diagnosis. If left untreated, prediabetes can develop into type 2 diabetes, but early intervention through diet and exercise can help reverse the condition.
The findings suggest that over 12 million people in the UK—one in five adults—are affected by diabetes or prediabetes.
Urgent Need for Action
Diabetes UK’s chief executive, Colette Marshall, emphasized the need for better screening and early detection programs to “find the missing millions” who are unaware of their condition.
“The sooner we can find and get them the care they need, the more harm we can prevent,” she said.
Understanding the Diabetes Epidemic
Diabetes comes in two main forms:
- Type 1 diabetes: A lifelong autoimmune condition where the body attacks insulin-producing cells.
- Type 2 diabetes: A condition where the body either does not produce enough insulin or does not use it effectively.
Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of all cases in the UK and is strongly linked to obesity, high blood pressure, and poor diet. Another 8% of cases are type 1 diabetes, while the remaining 2% involve rarer forms of the condition.
Serious Health Risks
Diabetes significantly increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage, and vision problems. Without proper management, the condition can lead to life-threatening complications.
Call for Government Action
The report highlights the global rise in diabetes, with 828 million cases worldwide in 2022, according to estimates published in The Lancet medical journal.
Diabetes UK is urging the British government to improve diabetes care, including support for newly diagnosed patients and annual health screenings to detect complications early.
“There must be better care for the millions of people living with all types of diabetes, to support them to live well and fend off the risk of developing devastating complications,” Marshall said.
With the number of diabetes cases continuing to rise, experts stress the importance of early diagnosis, prevention, and better healthcare services to manage the growing burden of the disease in the UK.
