Serhou Guirassy marked his first match as Guinea captain by scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory over Kenya in a 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.
The Borussia Dortmund striker struck in the 32nd minute to settle the Group D matchday two encounter in Conakry, where a capacity crowd of 25,000 watched Guinea secure their first points of the qualifying campaign.
Guirassy’s goal came after Guinea full-back Sekou Sylla broke into the penalty area and was blocked by a Kenyan defender. The loose ball fell to Guirassy, who quickly fired past goalkeeper Bryne Odhiambo to put the hosts ahead.
The 30-year-old forward had already threatened the Kenyan goal earlier in the first half. His free-kick beat the defensive wall but came back off the woodwork as Guinea pressed for an early breakthrough.
Guirassy remained a major attacking threat after the interval and came close to doubling Guinea’s advantage shortly after half-time. Kenya centre-back Frank Odhiambo produced a brave block to deny the Dortmund forward another goal.
The victory also provided a positive response for Guinea following their 2-0 defeat by South Africa in their opening qualifier last Saturday.
Portuguese coach Paulo Duarte made four changes to the side for the meeting with Kenya, including leaving out regular captain and centre-back Saidou Sow. Guirassy was handed the captain’s armband and responded by producing the decisive moment of the match.
South Africa lead Group D after two rounds with six points. They strengthened their position on Wednesday by defeating Eritrea 5-0.
Guinea moved onto three points following their victory, while Kenya and Eritrea have one point each.
The qualifying structure gives Kenya a different objective from the other teams in the group. Kenya are co-hosts of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations and will qualify automatically for the tournament.
Kenya are nevertheless participating in the qualifying competition to gain competitive match experience ahead of the tournament, meaning the remaining three teams in Group D are competing for the single available qualifying place.
Guinea will now look to build on Thursday’s result as they continue their campaign, with Guirassy’s leadership and scoring ability providing an important boost.
For Kenya, the defeat leaves them with one point from two matches, although their involvement in the qualifiers is primarily intended to provide preparation for their role as tournament co-hosts.
Guirassy’s goal was ultimately enough to give Guinea a valuable home victory and keep them within three points of group leaders South Africa after two rounds.
