A German national and a U.S. Border Patrol officer were killed in a gunfire exchange during a vehicle check near the Canadian border, while the driver, an American citizen, now faces multiple charges.
The incident occurred on Interstate 91, approximately 32 kilometers south of the Canadian border, when U.S. Border Patrol officers stopped a vehicle for inspection. According to officials, the vehicle’s occupants, Felix B., a German citizen, and Teresa Youngblut, a 21-year-old U.S. citizen, had been under FBI surveillance for days prior to the encounter.
Gunfire Erupts During Routine Check
Court documents state that approximately 15 minutes after the stop, Youngblut exited the vehicle, brandishing a handgun, and opened fire on the officers without warning. Felix B., the passenger, reportedly attempted to draw his own weapon but was shot in the ensuing gunfire.
The gunfight resulted in the deaths of Felix B. and a U.S. Border Patrol agent, while Youngblut sustained injuries. Authorities are investigating who fired the fatal shots.
Ongoing Investigation and Charges
Youngblut is facing charges of using a deadly weapon in an assault on a Border Patrol agent and discharging a firearm during the assault. She is set to appear before a U.S. federal judge on Monday. No charges have yet been filed for the killing of the Border Patrol officer.
According to the FBI, Felix B. was in the United States on a valid tourist visa. The investigation is ongoing, with authorities working to determine the full circumstances of the fatal encounter.
Prior FBI Surveillance
The pair had been under surveillance since January 14 after a hotel employee reported suspicious behavior. The employee noted that Youngblut was armed and that both individuals wore black tactical gear.
When questioned by federal agents, Youngblut and Felix B. claimed they were in the area searching for real estate but declined to provide further details. The FBI stated there was no basis to detain them at the time.
Evidence Found in Vehicle
A search of the car revealed an array of items, including foil-wrapped cell phones, a ballistic helmet, night-vision goggles, respirators, ammunition, and used shooting-range targets. Authorities also discovered a dozen electronic devices, travel information for multiple states, and a diary.
About two hours before the shooting, Felix B. was seen purchasing aluminum foil at a Walmart and wrapping unidentified objects in it.
Broader Investigation Underway
The FBI had been monitoring the pair for potential serious crimes. The bureau’s involvement reportedly included its cybercrime and fraud divisions.
This deadly encounter underscores the complexities of border security and the broader implications of federal investigations. Further updates are expected as the investigation progresses.
