Iran Sentences Azeri Activists Amid Crackdown on Civil Society, HRW Reports
Iran has sentenced at least two dozen Azeri minority activists to prison since October, with charges that lack credible evidence, according to a Human Rights Watch (HRW) report released on Sunday. The rights group accused Iranian authorities of using harsh prison sentences as a tool to suppress civil society and ethnic minorities.
The Azeri community, Iran’s largest ethnic minority, has long faced systematic discrimination, and the latest crackdown comes at a time of worsening diplomatic relations between Iran and Azerbaijan.
Heavy Sentences Without Evidence
According to HRW, the Islamic Revolutionary Court in Tehran handed down prison terms ranging between 3 to 14 years to at least 10 Azeri activists on various charges. The accusations included “membership in an opposition group,” “propaganda against the state,” “conspiracy against the country,” and “forming an opposition group against the state.”
HRW’s report, citing informed sources, revealed that some detainees were targeted for their activism on environmental issues, advocacy for ethnic rights, and assisting families of protesters who were killed or injured during Iran’s 2022 anti-government demonstrations.
Nahid Naghshbandi, acting Iran researcher at HRW, said:
“Iranian authorities systematically target civil society and ethnic minorities with abusive charges and heavy prison sentences to silence dissent.”
Allegations of Mistreatment and Denial of Medical Care
HRW also reported that Iranian authorities denied medical care to the detainees, with some held in solitary confinement and subjected to psychological pressure. The organization criticized Iran’s judiciary for using vague national security charges to suppress activists and silence political opposition.
The crackdown on Azeri activists is part of a broader pattern of repression in Iran, where authorities have escalated efforts to dismantle civil society movements and prevent minority groups from demanding basic rights.
Growing Tensions Between Iran and Azerbaijan
The imprisonment of Azeri activists comes amid escalating tensions between Iran and Azerbaijan. Relations between the two countries have been strained over border security issues, military cooperation between Azerbaijan and Israel, and Iran’s accusations that Baku is supporting separatist movements.
The international community has repeatedly criticized Iran for its treatment of ethnic minorities, including Azeris, Kurds, Baluchis, and Arabs, who face systematic marginalization and restricted access to cultural and linguistic rights.
HRW has called on the Iranian government to immediately release the activists and end its campaign of repression against civil society and minority groups.
