Ukrainian Forces Withdraw from Vuhledar as Russian Troops Advance
Ukrainian military command confirmed on Wednesday that its forces have withdrawn from the town of Vuhledar in the Donetsk region after intense fighting with Russian troops. The withdrawal comes as Moscow’s forces continue to push forward in the strategically important coal-mining town located in the Donbas.
Crowd-sourced monitoring platform DeepState reported that Russian soldiers entered Vuhledar on Tuesday, advancing from both the west and south. The U.S.-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW) also noted that Russian troops had made gains northeast of the town in recent days.
Geolocated footage, released earlier in the week, showed Russian forces planting flags and operating freely within various parts of Vuhledar. Pro-Russian military bloggers claimed on Tuesday that Russian forces had successfully seized the town.
Donetsk regional governor Vadym Filashkin described the situation as “very difficult” on Tuesday. He told Ukrainian television, “The enemy is already nearly in the centre of the city.”
On Wednesday, Ukraine’s Khortytsia army group officially announced that its forces had conducted a tactical withdrawal. “The higher command authorized a maneuver to withdraw units from Vuhledar in order to save personnel and military equipment and take up a position for further operations,” the group stated. Ukrainian troops from the 72nd Mechanized Brigade had defended the town for nearly two years.
While the full scale of Ukrainian casualties remains unclear, military analysts believe that the organized withdrawal likely helped prevent higher losses. The decision to retreat was seen as a strategic move to preserve forces for future counter-offensives.
What’s Next for Russian Forces?
Russian troops have been attempting to capture Vuhledar since the early stages of their full-scale invasion in 2022. The town has withstood multiple assaults in recent months as Moscow’s forces aimed to encircle it.
According to the ISW, it remains uncertain whether Russian forces will be able to make rapid gains beyond Vuhledar. Before launching further offensives, they will need to completely secure the town and establish it as a functional military position.
Ukrainian forces are reportedly preparing defensive positions northeast of Vuhledar to counter any future Russian advances. For now, the battle over this strategically vital area appears far from over.
