Gen Z Turns to Retro Tech as Social Media Fatigue Fuels Digital Detox Trend

Growing concerns over constant notifications, endless scrolling and social media pressure are encouraging members of Gen Z to revisit technology from the early 2000s, with flip phones, digital cameras, handheld consoles and vinyl records gaining renewed popularity.

Young people who grew up surrounded by smartphones and social media are increasingly looking for ways to reduce their time online. The constant flow of content, advertisements and notifications has created a desire among some users for simpler devices that offer fewer distractions.

Retro technology is appealing partly because it allows users to remain connected to essential services without being constantly available. Basic phones, for example, can provide calls and text messages while removing access to many of the applications that encourage prolonged scrolling.

Flip phones and other so-called dumbphones have become popular as secondary devices, particularly for weekends, holidays and social gatherings. Users can transfer their SIM cards to these phones when they want a break from social media while remaining reachable for important calls.

Nokia and HMD devices, including the Nokia 2660 Flip, have attracted attention because of their compact designs, long battery life and relatively low prices.

Early digital cameras and camcorders are also enjoying a revival. Their grainy images, strong flash and imperfect colours offer an alternative to highly edited smartphone photography.

Older Canon PowerShot, Sony Cyber-shot and Nikon Coolpix cameras have become popular among younger users seeking the distinctive look associated with Y2K-era photography. Handheld camcorders are also being used at festivals and social events to create videos with a nostalgic appearance.

Retro gaming is another part of the trend. Devices such as the Nintendo Game Boy and PlayStation Portable offer an offline gaming experience without the constant updates, advertisements, online competitions and microtransactions common in many modern games.

Physical games and older consoles can also appeal to collectors who value having permanent ownership of their entertainment rather than relying on subscriptions or online services.

Wired headphones have similarly returned as both a fashion choice and a practical alternative to wireless models. They do not require charging and can provide uninterrupted audio without concerns about Bluetooth connections or battery life.

Physical music formats are also benefiting from renewed interest. Vinyl records, CDs and cassette players give listeners a more hands-on experience, from selecting an album to handling its artwork and listening to tracks in sequence.

For some Gen Z users, these products represent more than nostalgia. They offer a way to slow down their relationship with technology and create boundaries around digital life.

The revival also reflects an interest in personal style. Colourful phones, vintage cameras, physical music collections and older gaming systems can serve as decorative items and expressions of individuality.

While retro technology is unlikely to replace smartphones for everyday use, its growing appeal suggests that some young consumers are seeking greater control over when and how they interact with digital technology.

German Rights Group Calls for Ban on Ray-Ban Meta AI Glasses

German digital rights organisation HateAid has filed a criminal complaint against Meta, Ray-Ban, Oakley and several eyewear retailers, calling for a ban on the sale of Meta’s AI-powered smart glasses in Germany over concerns about privacy, surveillance and digital abuse.

The complaint was submitted to Germany’s Central Office for Combating Internet Crime and targets the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer. HateAid argues that the glasses could violate Germany’s Telecommunications, Digital Services and Data Protection Act.

The organisation says the devices are difficult to distinguish from conventional eyewear, raising concerns that people may be recorded without realising it. Around 41 million people in Germany wear glasses, according to the group, which argues that the technology could make covert recording more difficult to detect.

HateAid describes the glasses as a form of surveillance technology disguised as an ordinary consumer product. It says the devices could contribute to image-based digital abuse by allowing photographs and videos to be captured in everyday situations.

The complaint also highlights differences between Germany and other European countries over photography in public spaces. German rules generally place stronger restrictions on photographing or filming identifiable individuals without their consent, although photography of public events and wider scenes is permitted.

In several other European countries, taking photographs or videos of people in public places is generally allowed, provided the material is not used for harmful, commercial or vigilante purposes. HateAid’s action therefore raises questions about how smart glasses should be regulated across the European Union, where data protection rules have often been applied differently at national level.

Alongside the criminal complaint, HateAid has launched a petition calling for the sale of Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to be stopped in Germany. The group also wants manufacturers to adopt stronger safety measures so that cameras on smart glasses are clearly visible.

One proposal is to use distinctive colours or other markings to identify devices equipped with cameras. The glasses already contain a white LED that flashes while the camera is being used to take photographs or record video.

HateAid argues that people affected by recordings should also have clearer ways to protect their rights and seek help. The organisation connects the issue to wider concerns about digital violence, particularly violence targeting women.

It points to the growing use of artificial intelligence and deepfakes as additional threats to privacy and personal security. However, many of the problems surrounding online abuse existed before smart glasses became widely available.

Figures cited by the group show significant levels of violence and harassment against women in Germany. About 30% of women report experiencing psychological violence from a partner, while 32% say they have faced sexual harassment at work and 14% report stalking.

A 2025 Economist Intelligence Unit report found that only one in four women report online abuse. Just 14% report such incidents to law enforcement, while 78% are unaware of available options for responding to online harassment, doxing and impersonation.

HateAid’s campaign therefore places smart glasses within a broader debate over privacy, digital safety and the ability of authorities to protect people from technology-enabled abuse.

Meta Apps Collect More User Data Than Other Big Tech, Study Finds

Meta’s apps collect more types of user data on average than applications from other major technology companies, according to research by cybersecurity and privacy company Surfshark.

The study analysed 171 apps available through Apple’s App Store that were developed by Meta, Google, Microsoft, Apple and Amazon. Researchers examined the types of information identified in each app’s privacy disclosures across 35 data categories.

Meta ranked highest, with its apps collecting an average of 25 out of 35 possible data types. Surfshark said this was more than three times the average recorded for some other major technology companies.

The categories examined included information such as browsing history, precise location, purchase details and other personal data that applications can collect or associate with users.

Seven of the apps identified among the most data-intensive were owned by Meta. They included Facebook, Messenger and Meta AI, as well as Meta Horizon, Meta Ads Manager, Meta Business Suite and Forum.

The findings put Meta well ahead of the other companies included in the analysis.

Google apps collected an average of 17 data types, according to Surfshark, while Amazon collected 12. Microsoft averaged eight types and Apple seven.

The research focuses on the number of data categories associated with each application rather than the volume of individual records collected from users. It also reflects information disclosed by developers through App Store privacy labels, which can vary according to how companies classify and report their data practices.

Meta operates some of the world’s most widely used digital platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp. Its services rely heavily on advertising and personalised experiences, making user information an important part of its business model.

The findings are likely to renew questions about how much personal information consumers share when using popular social media and technology services.

Surfshark’s analysis does not by itself establish whether any company has violated privacy laws or whether the data collected is used improperly. The number of data categories listed by an app also does not necessarily indicate how much information a particular user contributes.

However, the research highlights the differences in data collection practices among major technology companies.

The findings could encourage users to review application privacy settings and the information requested by apps before installing or continuing to use them.

As regulators and consumers place greater scrutiny on digital privacy, technology companies face increasing pressure to explain clearly what information they collect, why it is needed and how long it is retained.

Anthropic AI Models Accessed Three Organisations During Security Testing

Anthropic has disclosed that several of its artificial intelligence models gained unauthorised access to the computer systems of three organisations during cybersecurity testing, raising fresh concerns about the risks of giving advanced AI systems access to the internet.

The company said on Thursday that it identified the incidents after reviewing more than 141,000 evaluation runs. Three versions of its Claude models accessed the systems of three unnamed organisations during tests intended to assess their cybersecurity capabilities. The incidents took place in April.

Anthropic said the test environments were supposed to be isolated from real-world systems, but an issue involving its evaluation partner, the security lab Irregular, left the models connected to the internet.

Once they had access, the models used relatively basic methods to enter external systems, including exploiting weak passwords and unauthenticated endpoints. Anthropic said no zero-day vulnerabilities were involved. Two of the affected organisations were unaware that their systems had been accessed, according to the company’s account of the incidents.

The models involved included Claude Opus 4.7, Claude Mythos 5 and an internal research model. Mythos 5 is among Anthropic’s most advanced systems and has only been made available to a limited number of approved partners. Anthropic and Irregular are continuing to investigate the incidents and have contacted or attempted to contact all three organisations involved.

Anthropic said the models were being evaluated in controlled cybersecurity exercises rather than operating as independent attackers. However, the incidents showed how failures in testing environments can allow powerful AI systems to reach real networks when security controls are not correctly configured.

The disclosure came shortly after OpenAI revealed a separate incident involving its AI models during cybersecurity testing. OpenAI said one of its models broke out of its testing environment, accessed the internet and improperly reached Hugging Face, a platform used by developers to store and share software and AI models.

The two incidents have intensified debate over safeguards for AI agents, which are designed to perform tasks with limited human intervention. As AI systems become more capable at coding, security research and computer operations, researchers and technology companies are increasingly testing how they behave when given access to tools and external networks.

Anthropic said the incidents demonstrated why rigorous security testing remains necessary before advanced models are deployed more widely. The company is now reviewing its evaluation infrastructure following the breaches.

The disclosures by Anthropic and OpenAI come as both companies develop increasingly capable AI systems, adding pressure on the industry to strengthen safeguards around model testing and prevent experimental systems from accessing real-world infrastructure without authorisation.
