The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed a military strike on a school in central Gaza on Thursday, stating it targeted a Hamas command center embedded within the building. According to the IDF, the compound had been repurposed from its previous use as the “Shuhada al-Nuseirat” school and was allegedly being used by Hamas militants to plan and execute attacks against Israeli forces.
In a statement, the Israeli military explained, “The command and control center, which was embedded inside a compound that previously served as the ‘Shuhada’ al-Nuseirat’ school, was used by the terrorists to plan and execute terrorist attacks against IDF troops and the State of Israel.” The IDF emphasized that the strike was part of ongoing efforts to neutralize Hamas’ operational capabilities in the Gaza Strip.
However, the attack resulted in significant civilian casualties. Officials from Al-Awda Hospital in Gaza reported that at least 17 people were killed and 42 others injured in the strike. The identities of those killed have not yet been disclosed, but local authorities confirmed that many of the victims were civilians.
Qatar Re-engages with Hamas Following Sinwar’s Death
On the diplomatic front, Qatar has resumed contact with the Hamas political bureau in Doha following the killing of the group’s leader, Yahya Sinwar, in Gaza last week. Qatari Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani confirmed the renewed discussions during a news conference in Doha.
“We had some meetings with them in the last couple of days; I believe that … there is no clarity on what will be the way forward,” Al Thani said, noting that Hamas’ stance on key issues, including a ceasefire and hostage negotiations, remains unchanged.
Hamas has maintained that hostages will only be released if Israel ends its military operations in Gaza, withdraws forces, and releases Palestinian prisoners. These demands, which have been presented to mediators multiple times over the past year, have been consistently rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Al Thani also confirmed that a Hamas delegation is currently in Egypt for ongoing discussions. In parallel, negotiating teams from the United States and Israel are expected to visit Doha in a renewed effort to broker a deal concerning Gaza.
Qatar continues to push for a resolution to the conflict. “Pressure from our side will continue on all sides to reach an agreement to end the war; it’s a priority for us,” Al Thani said during a joint press conference with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. The meetings aim to explore potential breakthroughs in the negotiations, with a focus on halting the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
