Malta Leads EU in Healthy Life Expectancy, New Eurostat Data Reveals
Malta has emerged as the European Union’s top country for healthy life expectancy, according to new data released by Eurostat for 2022. The Mediterranean island nation ranks highest for both men and women, offering the longest periods of life without disabilities or limitations in daily activities.
Women in Malta can expect an average of 70.3 healthy life years, while men enjoy 70.1 healthy life years, the data shows. This puts Malta ahead of all other EU countries, largely due to its nearly universal healthcare coverage and lower incidence of chronic health conditions among its older population.
Other top-performing countries for women include Bulgaria (68.9 healthy life years), Slovenia (68.5), Italy (67.8), and Greece (67.8). For men, Sweden (67.5), Italy (67.1), Greece (66.2), Cyprus (65.7), and Ireland (65.2) complete the top five.
Healthy life expectancy measures the number of years individuals can expect to live without significant health issues, providing a snapshot of how well nations support their aging populations. With Europeans living longer than ever, this metric is crucial in assessing quality of life in old age across the EU.
On the lower end of the spectrum, Denmark ranks worst for women, despite having a strong public healthcare system. Danish women can expect just 54.6 healthy life years, due to higher cancer rates and other health challenges. Latvia (55.4), the Netherlands (56.3), Finland (56.5), Portugal (58), and Slovakia (58) also ranked poorly for women’s healthy life expectancy.
For men, Latvia fared worst, with men there expecting only 53 healthy life years. Slovakia (56.6), Denmark (57.1), Estonia (58), and Lithuania (58.2) followed closely behind.
In total, eight countries in the EU report an average healthy life expectancy below 60 years for both genders. These include Latvia, Denmark, Slovakia, Finland, the Netherlands, Romania, Portugal, and Estonia.
While women tend to live longer than men across the EU, the average healthy life expectancy is relatively close—62.8 years for women compared to 62.4 years for men. However, men generally spend less time in poor health later in life.
Interestingly, countries with high healthy life expectancy don’t necessarily have the longest overall life expectancy. For instance, Bulgaria, which ranks highly for healthy life years, has the EU’s lowest overall life expectancy at 75.8 years.
