Israel Launches Fresh Strikes on Hezbollah Infrastructure in Southern Lebanon
Israel has launched a new wave of airstrikes targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure in southern Lebanon, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The strikes come in response to Hezbollah’s drone attacks on northern Israel, which intensified the ongoing conflict between the two parties.
The escalation in violence occurred Thursday, when Hezbollah launched a barrage of drone strikes into Israel. This prompted a swift military response from Israel, aiming to weaken the Iranian-backed militant group’s capabilities. The situation has heightened tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border, where Hezbollah has maintained a significant presence.
In Beirut, Israeli fighter jets were seen flying low over the Lebanese capital, breaking the sound barrier during a televised speech by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. In his first public address since the recent attacks, Nasrallah condemned a series of targeted explosions across Lebanon, which destroyed communications devices used by Hezbollah operatives, calling it a “severe blow” that crossed a “red line.” Nasrallah confirmed that Hezbollah is investigating the two-day attack, which left over 30 dead and thousands wounded. Although widely attributed to Israel, the country has not officially claimed responsibility.
The explosions were triggered by detonating pagers and walkie-talkies used by Hezbollah members. While the primary targets were Hezbollah operatives, the blasts also killed civilians, including at least two children. Some members of Hezbollah’s social branches were injured as well.
While Israel has remained silent on its involvement, a former senior official from Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency praised the operation, calling it a success. Sima Shine, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies, said the combination of intelligence, technology, and operational capabilities was key to the success. Shine emphasized that the operation specifically targeted Hezbollah operatives and was not intended to harm civilians, though some were incidentally affected.
The Israeli government has described the situation as ushering in a “new era” of conflict, aimed at stopping cross-border fire from Hezbollah and ensuring the safety of Israelis living near the Lebanese border.
In a related development, Bulgarian authorities have denied reports that explosive devices used by Hezbollah were shipped through Bulgaria. Media outlets had alleged that a Bulgarian company had supplied the Lebanese organization with explosives, but officials in Sofia rejected these claims.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah continues to destabilize the region, with no immediate end in sight.
