Missile Attack from Yemen Prompts Israeli Retaliation, Heightening Regional Tensions
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a stark warning to Yemen’s Houthi rebels after the group launched a missile deep into Israeli territory early Monday. The missile, fired at 6 a.m. local time, originated from Yemen and targeted central Israel. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that the missile, believed to have fragmented mid-air, fell in an open area, causing no injuries.
Videos released by the Israel Fire and Rescue Authority on social media platforms show large plumes of smoke and damage to a train station in Modi’in, a city located between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Authorities are investigating the impact site, and police have deployed bomb squads in the Judaean Foothills to recover interceptor fragments.
The Iran-backed Houthi military spokesman confirmed the missile launch, claiming they used a “new hypersonic ballistic missile” in the attack. The group warned of further strikes as the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks approaches. However, the IDF stated the missile was not a hypersonic one, despite the claims.
The missile strike, penetrating as far as central Israel, is a rare escalation in the ongoing conflict. “We are in a multi-arena campaign against Iran’s evil axis that strives to destroy us,” said Netanyahu, referencing Israel’s previous military strikes on Yemeni targets, including the port of Hodeidah in July following a deadly drone attack on Tel Aviv. “They should know by now that we exact a heavy price for any attempt to harm us,” he added.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian denied that Tehran had supplied the Houthis with hypersonic missiles, stating that the group had acquired the necessary technology independently. Iran, which revealed its own hypersonic missile last year, has long been accused of arming regional militias hostile to Israel.
Adding to the rising tensions, approximately 40 projectiles were fired from Lebanon into northern Israel on Sunday, with some intercepted by Israel’s defense systems and others landing in open areas. Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group in Lebanon, has been launching regular barrages into Israel since the conflict escalated. Netanyahu warned that the status quo on the northern front “will not continue,” stressing the need for a shift in the balance of power.
These developments come as Israel continues its military campaign against Hamas in Gaza following the deadly October 7 attacks, which resulted in the deaths of more than 1,200 Israelis. Since the start of the conflict, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that more than 41,000 Palestinians have been killed, with a majority of the casualties being women and children. The international community remains on high alert, fearing further escalation across the Middle East.
