Study Reveals Women Experience Greater Weight Loss with Tirzepatide than Men
A recent study has found that women using the weight loss drug tirzepatide, marketed under the brand name Mounjaro, experienced significantly greater weight loss compared to men. The research was presented at the Annual Meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) in Spain.
Tirzepatide, a medication administered as a weekly injection, is approved in the European Union for treating type 2 diabetes and obesity. The study involved 4,677 adults, including 2,999 women and 1,678 men, all of whom were either overweight or obese. Some participants had type 2 diabetes, while others did not.
The trial compared the effects of different doses of tirzepatide with a placebo, and the results were clear: all participants who took tirzepatide saw weight loss, but women showed more significant reductions in body weight than men. On average, women lost up to 24.6% of their body weight, compared to 18.1% for men. Additionally, similar proportions of both men and women achieved weight losses between 5% and 15% of their total body weight.
While the drug proved effective for both genders, the study also highlighted some side effects, which were more common among women. Gastrointestinal issues, such as nausea and vomiting, were reported at higher rates by female participants.
Despite these side effects, the overall benefits of the drug were notable. Previous studies have linked similar weight loss percentages with improvements in cardiovascular health, particularly in adults with obesity or who are overweight.
When asked about the difference in weight loss between men and women, Dr. Luis-Emilio García, lead author of the study from pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly and Company, said there is no clear explanation yet. He suggested that factors like body fat distribution, body composition, hormones, and pharmacological differences may play a role in how the drug works differently in men and women.
“This post hoc analysis underscores the consistent benefits of tirzepatide for women and men. More research is needed to understand the mechanism by which females may experience more weight reduction in these trials,” García said.
Tirzepatide has emerged as a promising treatment for both type 2 diabetes and weight loss, but further investigation is required to fully understand the gender-specific responses to the medication.
