Russian Strikes on Ukrainian Hospital and Residential Areas Result in Multiple Casualties
Russian military forces launched a devastating missile strike on the Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro, Ukraine, late Thursday night, resulting in at least five deaths, including a child. The attack also injured at least 21 people, prompting outrage from Ukrainian officials and President Volodymyr Zelensky.
President Zelensky characterized the Mechnikov Hospital, which previously served around 40,000 patients annually, as one of Ukraine’s “most important” medical facilities. The strike occurred shortly after the BRICs summit in Kazan, where world leaders had called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Zelensky pointedly remarked on social media, “After everything said in Kazan, Russian murderers have resumed their usual business.” He emphasized that such aggression cannot be curtailed by mere words but requires decisive action to protect the nation and its citizens.
Serhii Lysak, the head of the Dnipro regional military administration, confirmed the attack via Telegram, stating, “Five people were killed in the strikes overnight.” Among the injured was a 17-year-old boy, who is reported to be in serious condition. Lysak further detailed the extensive damage inflicted on the city, including the destruction of one apartment building and damage to dozens of others. Photos from the scene displayed rescuers sifting through debris and assessing the destruction within the hospital.
Dnipro’s mayor, Borys Filatov, recounted the harrowing experience of the night as missiles rained down. “This is not just a two-story building; this is an ordinary residential building with eight apartments hit with a ballistic missile,” he stated, emphasizing the impact on civilians.
The violence was not confined to Dnipro. The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, also faced aerial assaults, with reports indicating that a young girl was killed when her apartment building in the Solomianskyi district was struck. Additionally, a woman in her fifties died in the Kyiv region. The head of Kyiv’s military administration, Serhii Popko, reported that over 100 residents were evacuated following the attack, which was the sixteenth air strike on the capital in October alone.
The Ukrainian Air Force noted that Russia employed a combination of missiles, including Iskander-M ballistic missiles, Shahed-type attack drones, and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in its assault across various Ukrainian cities. Despite the chaos, Ukrainian air defenses managed to intercept 44 out of 91 UAVs during the latest attacks, according to their statements on Telegram.
As Ukraine continues to grapple with the impacts of the ongoing conflict, officials and citizens alike are left to mourn the loss of life and the destruction of vital infrastructure, underscoring the ongoing humanitarian crisis exacerbated by the war.

Pakistan Signals Near-Completion of US-Iran Peace Deal as Negotiations Intensify
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that a proposed peace agreement between the United States and Iran was closer than ever to being finalised, with expectations that it could be completed within 24 hours. His remarks came amid heightened diplomatic activity involving multiple regional and international actors working to bridge long-standing differences between Washington and Tehran.
Iranian state media reported on Sunday that Tehran had not yet reached a final decision on the draft agreement aimed at ending tensions between the two countries. The uncertainty followed a series of statements suggesting that progress had accelerated significantly in recent days.
US President Donald Trump also indicated on Saturday that a deal was within reach, echoing optimism from mediators involved in the process, including Pakistan. In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump stated that the agreement was scheduled for signing the following day. He added that once completed, the Strait of Hormuz would be opened for unrestricted passage.
“Hopefully, this process will all work out quickly, easily, and smoothly. If it doesn’t, we have the ultimate alternative, hopefully never to be used again,” Trump said, while also emphasizing that the arrangement would prevent nuclear escalation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, speaking earlier on Saturday, described the situation as being at its closest point to resolution. He said Pakistan was preparing for an electronic signing ceremony once final agreement was reached. According to his statement on X, technical-level discussions would continue in the days following the signing to ensure implementation of the deal’s provisions.
Diplomatic engagement continued on Sunday when a Qatari delegation arrived in Tehran. According to Iran’s Tasnim news agency, the delegation’s purpose was to review the latest developments related to the ongoing diplomatic process and maintain momentum in negotiations.
Central to the proposed agreement is Iran’s commitment to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage for global oil and gas shipments. Another key condition involves curbing Tehran’s nuclear program, which has been a longstanding point of contention in its relations with Western powers.
While optimism has grown among mediators, Iranian authorities have not confirmed final approval, leaving the outcome uncertain. Negotiations are expected to continue as involved parties attempt to resolve outstanding issues and move toward formal agreement.
