Israeli Airstrike Kills Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah, Likely Using US-Made Bombs
A recent Israeli airstrike targeting Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Beirut was likely carried out using American-manufactured 2,000-pound bombs, according to a review of footage and analysis by munitions experts. The strike, which occurred on Friday night, has led to significant destruction in the Dahiyeh area of southern Beirut, known as a Hezbollah stronghold.
The Israeli military released a video on Saturday showing jets loaded with at least 15 2,000-pound bombs, including the US-made BLU-109, often referred to as “bunker busters” due to their ability to penetrate deep underground. Trevor Ball, a former US Army explosive ordnance technician, identified the bombs in the footage reviewed by CNN. These munitions were also fitted with Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) kits, which convert unguided bombs into precision-guided “smart” weapons.
Footage geolocated to the site of the attack revealed a large crater and destroyed multistory apartment buildings. Satellite imagery confirmed that four buildings were leveled in the strike, which Israeli defense officials claim involved approximately 80 bombs targeting Nasrallah’s underground headquarters. While this number is plausible, Ball noted that it is difficult to estimate the exact number of munitions based on the available evidence.
Experts, including Justin Bronk from the Royal United Services Institute, confirmed that the crater’s size and characteristics were consistent with the use of 2,000-pound BLU-109 bombs equipped with JDAM kits. The weapons are known for their ability to strike hardened underground targets, which aligns with the reported target of the operation.
The Israeli military did not release footage of the moment the bombs were dropped, but videos circulating on social media showed massive explosions and multiple smoke plumes, indicating near-simultaneous impacts of the bombs.
The strike marks a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, with Israeli forces continuing airstrikes in Lebanon over the weekend, killing over 100 people and injuring 350. This comes as Israel also conducts heavy airstrikes in Gaza, in response to the Hamas-led attack on October 7, which resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people. The Israeli military has been criticized for its extensive use of 2,000-pound bombs, known for their potential to cause high civilian casualties due to their wide blast radius.
