Italian Police Arrest 19 Milan Football Ultras in Mafia Crackdown at San Siro
Italian authorities arrested 19 people on Monday, accusing them of forming mafia-like criminal groups to control businesses around the iconic San Siro stadium in Milan. The arrests have reportedly crippled the leadership of hardcore fan groups, or ultras, supporting Serie A clubs AC Milan and FC Internazionale.
The detainees, many of whom are top figures among the ultras of these two football clubs, face charges that include criminal conspiracy, employing “mafia methods,” extortion, assault, and other serious crimes. Investigators are also probing potential connections to the notorious Calabrian mafia group, ‘Ndrangheta.
According to reports, the criminal ring sought to dominate various business activities at the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, better known as San Siro. These ventures include food and beverage concessions, ticket sales, fan merchandise, and even paid parking services. Authorities believe the group may also have been involved in drug trafficking.
Among the arrested are notable figures such as Alex Cologno and Christian Rosiello, described by Italian media as “friends and bodyguards” of rapper and music producer Fedez. Also detained was Luca Lucci, a known acquaintance of Matteo Salvini, leader of Italy’s far-right Lega party.
Police raids extended to over 50 fan homes, including that of Giancarlo Lombardi, a former top AC Milan ultra known as “The Baron,” and the home of Antonio Bellocco, a former ‘Ndrangheta boss who was recently killed. Authorities suggest Bellocco’s death may have been linked to conflicts with an Inter Milan ultra.
Since 1981, AC Milan and Inter Milan ultras have maintained a “non-belligerence pact” following the tragic death of a 21-year-old fan. However, investigators now believe this longstanding agreement has evolved into a lucrative business alliance, allowing the fan groups to jointly control and profit from various commercial aspects of football at San Siro.
The arrests are part of a larger effort to dismantle mafia influence within the world of football, a business where criminal organizations have long sought to exert control over profitable sidelines. This latest crackdown highlights the intersection of sports and organized crime in Italy, with investigators determined to clean up the stadiums and protect legitimate businesses from mafia infiltration.
