Death Toll Rises to 129 as Floods and Landslides Devastate Nepal
The death toll from floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Nepal has risen to at least 129, with dozens more missing, authorities reported on Sunday. Rescue efforts are underway, but officials fear the numbers could climb further as reports begin to arrive from more remote villages in the Himalayan state.
Rescuers have been working around the clock, recovering dozens of bodies from buses and vehicles that were buried in landslides near the capital, Kathmandu. On Saturday night, emergency crews pulled 14 bodies from two buses that were buried in a landslide while en route to the capital. The following day, another 23 bodies were found in the same area, about 16 kilometers from Kathmandu, as crews continued to search for other victims potentially trapped in the debris.
Kathmandu remains largely cut off from the rest of the country, with three highways leading out of the city blocked by landslides. The disruption has hampered rescue and clean-up operations, but the weather has improved since Sunday, allowing efforts to proceed.
The Nepal police have confirmed that 86 people have been injured, while 62 others remain missing. Rescue teams are scouring affected areas in hopes of locating survivors. As a precaution, the government has announced the closure of schools and colleges across Nepal for the next three days, as officials continue to assess the damage caused by the intense weather.
The heavy monsoon rains, which began on Friday, have caused widespread flooding and landslides, overwhelming much of the country. Although the rains slowed down on Saturday night, more rain is expected throughout the weekend, raising concerns about further landslides in already fragile regions.
Last week, the government issued nationwide flood warnings, urging residents to brace for massive rainfall. Authorities had banned bus travel on highways at night and discouraged people from driving, measures that may have prevented more casualties in the disaster.
Nepal’s mountainous terrain makes it particularly vulnerable to landslides and flash floods during the monsoon season, and the country has struggled to prepare for extreme weather events. As rescue operations continue, officials warn that the full extent of the disaster may not be known for several days.
