Portugal to Raise Minimum Wage to €870 by 2025
Portugal is set to increase its national minimum wage to €870 a month by 2025, following an announcement from the country’s Minister of Labour earlier this week. The minister confirmed that the wage hike was “absolutely a done deal,” providing a boost for many workers across the country. Currently, the minimum wage in Portugal stands at €820 per month.
In addition to the upcoming 2025 increase, the Portuguese government has proposed an annual raise of €50 for the minimum wage until 2028. This would bring the national minimum wage to €1,020 by that year.
Despite these planned increases, Portugal’s minimum wage remains relatively low compared to many of its European Union counterparts. According to Eurostat data, Portugal ranks twelfth out of the 22 EU member states that have a national minimum wage.
Leading the EU rankings is Luxembourg, where workers earn a minimum of €2,204 per month. Ireland follows with a minimum wage of €1,840, while the Netherlands comes in third with €1,829. Other countries in the top five include Belgium, with €1,774, and Germany, where the minimum wage is €1,761. France rounds out the higher-paying nations, offering €1,550 per month.
While Portugal’s rising minimum wage signals progress, it remains well behind wealthier European nations. The gap highlights the disparities in living standards and economic conditions across the continent.
What Is Considered a “Good” Salary in Europe?
In addition to minimum wage comparisons, recent reports have explored what is considered a “good” salary in various European countries. Several factors, including location, experience, and lifestyle, influence what is deemed sufficient for a comfortable living.
For instance, in Germany, a gross annual salary between €64,000 and €70,000 is considered a good income, translating to a monthly net salary of around €3,300 to €3,600. In France, a comfortable salary for a single person is estimated to be around €3,200 per month, while a family of three would typically need about €5,600.
In Spain, a good monthly salary for a single person is around €2,700 net, while in Ireland, a gross monthly income between €4,100 and €6,000 is considered sufficient for a comfortable life. The average salary in Ireland for full-time workers is currently €3,220 per month.
As Portugal prepares for its minimum wage increase, these comparisons highlight the varying economic landscapes across Europe and what it takes for workers to live comfortably in different regions.
