Rocket Fire from Lebanon Hits Israel as Conflict with Hezbollah Intensifies
Over 100 rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel early Sunday, with some landing near the northern city of Haifa, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. The attack targeted a wider area than previous strikes and triggered air raid sirens across northern Israel, causing widespread damage and injuries.
The Israeli military reported that rockets were aimed at civilian areas, a departure from earlier barrages that primarily targeted military installations. Magen David Adom, Israel’s emergency service, confirmed it treated four individuals for shrapnel wounds, including a 76-year-old man who was moderately injured near Haifa. The attack damaged buildings and set cars on fire, though it remains unclear whether the destruction was caused by rockets or Israeli interceptors.
The rocket assault followed a deadly Israeli airstrike in Beirut, which killed at least 37 people, including a top Hezbollah leader and several civilians. This strike came just days after a series of explosions, widely blamed on Israel, devastated Hezbollah communications equipment, causing thousands of devices to explode.
In response, the Israeli military launched a wave of airstrikes across southern Lebanon, targeting approximately 400 militant sites, including rocket launchers. As the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah intensifies, concerns grow that both sides are edging closer to full-scale war.
Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire since the war in Gaza began almost a year ago, with Hezbollah expressing solidarity with Palestinians and Hamas, another Iran-backed militant group. While both sides have refrained from seeking outright war, recent developments have shifted Israel’s focus from Gaza to Lebanon.
Hezbollah, in a statement, claimed responsibility for launching dozens of Fadi 1 and Fadi 2 missiles at Israel’s Ramat David airbase in retaliation for Israeli airstrikes that killed civilians in Lebanon. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah posted a video purportedly showing the attack on the airbase.
The conflict’s toll continues to mount. In Lebanon, casualties from Israeli strikes, particularly a Friday airstrike on an eight-story building in Beirut, have risen. Among those killed was Ibrahim Akil, a senior Hezbollah commander. Lebanon’s health ministry reported that women and children were also among the dead, with many more injured or missing.
As international efforts to broker a cease-fire stall, the violence shows no signs of abating, leaving northern Israel and southern Lebanon in a state of heightened tension.
