London Mayor Unveils Plan to Pedestrianize Oxford Street, Aims to Revitalize Iconic Shopping District
London’s Oxford Street, one of the world’s most famous shopping destinations, could soon be transformed into a pedestrian-only zone under new plans announced by Mayor Sadiq Khan on Tuesday. The proposal, which has long been debated, aims to rejuvenate the area after years of challenges, including declining tourism and retail closures.
The mayor’s office said the ambitious plans involve “turning the road into a traffic-free pedestrianized avenue, creating a beautiful public space.” Oxford Street currently attracts over 500,000 visitors daily and is home to flagship stores like Selfridges and John Lewis. However, the street has struggled in recent years, with tourist numbers still below pre-pandemic levels and several prominent stores closing down.
“Oxford Street was once the jewel in the crown of Britain’s retail sector, but there’s no doubt that it has suffered hugely over the last decade,” Mayor Khan said in a statement. “Urgent action is needed to give the nation’s most famous high street a new lease of life.”
Khan’s proposal marks a renewed effort to breathe life into the iconic street, which has also been affected by an influx of discount shops selling novelty items, including American-themed candy. Previous attempts to pedestrianize Oxford Street were blocked by Westminster City Council, which oversees the area. Khan’s current plan is contingent on the government granting him additional planning powers, which would limit some of the council’s authority.
Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner welcomed the plan, stating that it “will drive growth by creating new jobs, generating economic activity, and giving a much-needed boost to London’s night-time economy.”
Westminster City Council responded with a statement acknowledging its own redevelopment plans for Oxford Street, which have been in the works for two years. “These plans are shovel-ready, have had the support of retailers and the local community, and were intended to deliver significant economic growth,” the council said. However, the council also expressed a willingness to collaborate with the mayor and the government to ensure the best outcome for local businesses and residents.
Khan’s vision for Oxford Street includes making the area “substantially greener, cleaner, and safer for everyone.” He hopes the pedestrianization plan will restore Oxford Street to its former glory as the leading retail destination globally, improving the experience for shoppers, workers, residents, and tourists alike.
Several procedural steps remain before the plan can move forward, including a public consultation. The mayor’s office aims to have a transition scheme in place within the next two years.
