Global Study Finds Sleep May Play Greater Role Than Exercise in Overall Health

A major international study has found that only a small share of people manage to meet recommended levels of both sleep and daily physical activity, raising new questions about long-standing health guidelines and how people can realistically follow them.

The research, published in the journal Communications Medicine, analysed data from wearable sleep and activity trackers from more than 70,000 people across multiple regions over a period of three and a half years. The findings show that only about 13 per cent consistently achieved the commonly promoted targets of seven to nine hours of sleep each night and at least 8,000 steps per day.

Lead author Josh Fitton, a sleep researcher at Flinders University in Australia, said the results highlight the gap between public health recommendations and everyday routines. “Only a tiny fraction of people can achieve both recommended sleep and activity levels every day, so we really need to think about how these guidelines work together and what we can do to support people to meet them in ways that fit real life,” he said.

The study revealed that people often manage to either get sufficient rest or maintain an active routine, but struggle to sustain both. Nearly 17 per cent of participants averaged fewer than seven hours of sleep and fewer than 5,000 steps daily, placing them in what researchers described as a “sedentary” group. This combination has been linked in past studies to a higher likelihood of chronic illness, weight gain and mental health issues.

Researchers noted that the data has limitations, as tracking devices tend to be more commonly used in higher-income countries, potentially skewing the global representation. Even so, the analysis uncovered a consistent pattern across participants: those who slept between six and seven hours a night recorded the highest number of steps the next day.

Senior author Danny Eckert, also from Flinders University, said the findings suggest that sleep may play a stronger role than many realise in shaping daily energy and activity levels. “Prioritising sleep could be the most effective way to boost your energy, motivation, and capacity for movement,” he said.

He added that small adjustments can help people build healthier routines. This includes reducing screen exposure before bed, maintaining regular sleep schedules and creating calming nighttime environments to support better rest.

The study’s authors say the results point to a need for clearer and more practical guidance, especially for people who struggle to balance work, family responsibilities and personal health goals. They say that for many, improving sleep habits may be the most realistic first step toward leading more active and healthier lives.

Irregular Sleep Patterns Linked to Higher Anxiety Risk Among Teenagers

Teenagers who regularly change their sleeping patterns between weekdays and weekends may face a greater risk of anxiety, according to a new study from researchers at the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom.

The findings come as students return to school after the summer break, when many adolescents may have become accustomed to later nights and longer mornings. The shift back to early school schedules can create a mismatch between weekday and weekend sleep patterns, a phenomenon researchers describe as “social jet lag.”

A review of 12 studies involving more than 230,000 participants found that teenagers experiencing greater levels of social jet lag were more likely to report higher levels of anxiety. The relationship also appeared to work in the opposite direction, with higher anxiety associated with greater disruption to sleep schedules.

However, researchers stressed that the findings show an association rather than proving that irregular sleep directly causes anxiety.

The study highlights the importance of encouraging healthy and consistent sleeping habits as part of efforts to support adolescent mental health. Anxiety is already one of the most common mental health problems among young people.

The World Health Organization estimates that anxiety disorders affect about 4.4% of children aged 10 to 14 and 5.5% of those aged 15 to 19 worldwide. Such disorders involve persistent fear or nervousness that can be difficult to control.

Researchers say adolescence is a particularly important period for sleep because biological changes naturally alter young people’s body clocks.

Sarah Chellappa, a co-author of the study from the University of Southampton, said teenagers generally experience a shift toward later sleep during puberty.

“During puberty, the body’s internal clock usually shifts back by a few hours,” she said, meaning teenagers naturally become sleepy later and may need to wake later as well.

Early school starts can conflict with this biological change. Social activities, online communication and other demands can also reduce the amount of sleep teenagers get during the week.

Hannah Ravenhall, lead author of the study, said the issue should not be viewed solely as a matter of individual responsibility.

She said broader social systems can influence young people’s sleep and called for greater recognition of the biological changes that occur during adolescence.

The researchers suggested that schools could consider whether their start times adequately reflect teenagers’ changing sleep needs. Parents could also review evening routines, including rules around screen use.

Rather than simply encouraging teenagers to go to bed earlier, the researchers argue that more consistent schedules and changes to the environments in which young people live and study could help support better sleep and mental wellbeing.

Wegovy Weight-Loss Pill Hits German Pharmacies at Up to €280

Novo Nordisk’s Wegovy weight-loss pill has gone on sale in German pharmacies, giving adults an alternative to the weekly injection already used to treat obesity.

The prescription-only tablet became available in Germany on September 1 following approval by European regulators in July. Germany is the first European country where the oral version of Wegovy is being marketed. Novo Nordisk described the launch as a major milestone for its obesity treatment business.

The tablet contains semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the injectable form of Wegovy. The medicine works by mimicking a gut hormone involved in regulating appetite and increasing feelings of fullness, which can help people eat less.

Novo Nordisk expects the retail pharmacy price for the adult tablet to range from about €170 to €280. Unlike the injectable version, which is approved for some children aged 12 and above, the tablet is currently authorised only for adults.

Evidence supporting the European approval came largely from the OASIS-4 clinical trial. In the study, 205 participants received the semaglutide tablet, while another 102 were given a placebo. Adults taking the medicine lost an average of about 13.6 per cent of their body weight during the 64-week treatment period.

The weight reduction was lower than that recorded with injectable semaglutide in a separate study, where participants lost an average of 19 per cent. However, the injection trial lasted 72 weeks, giving participants eight additional weeks of treatment.

The tablet also carries potential side effects. Gastrointestinal problems such as nausea and diarrhoea are among the commonly reported reactions. In some cases, semaglutide can also cause inflammation of the pancreas.

The main difference for patients is how the medicine is taken. The tablet must be taken every day, while Wegovy injections are administered once a week.

Julia Szendrödi, president of the German Diabetes Association, said medication should be used alongside healthy eating and physical activity. She stressed that obesity treatments are designed to form part of a wider approach to managing a chronic disease rather than serving as a quick solution for weight control.

Szendrödi also called for stronger prevention measures, including clearer food labelling, improved nutritional standards for school meals and restrictions on advertising unhealthy food to children.

The launch comes as pharmaceutical companies compete for a rapidly expanding global obesity-drug market. Analysts expect the sector could generate about $100 billion in annual sales by 2030.

Novo Nordisk faces growing competition from rivals including Eli Lilly, which is expanding its own oral weight-loss treatment portfolio. In the UK, Eli Lilly’s Foundayo pill is scheduled to become available.

Wegovy and similar medicines are primarily intended for people with obesity, generally defined as a BMI of 30 or higher. They may also be prescribed to some people with a lower BMI when excess weight is linked to conditions such as type 2 diabetes or sleep apnoea.

Congo Begins Ebola Vaccination Campaign as Deadliest Outbreak Escalates

The Democratic Republic of Congo has begun vaccinating people against Ebola as authorities try to contain the country’s fastest-growing outbreak of the disease, while researchers continue testing a vaccine designed specifically for the strain responsible for the current crisis.

The vaccination campaign began on Thursday in Kisangani, the capital of Tshopo province. Health workers and other frontline responders are being prioritised for the Ervebo vaccine, which has previously been effective against outbreaks caused by the more common Zaire strain of Ebola.

Health Minister Roger Kamba said the first priority was to protect people working directly with Ebola patients and communities affected by the outbreak.

Government figures showed that, as of Tuesday, Congo had recorded 5,713 confirmed Ebola cases, including 2,744 deaths. The outbreak is concentrated mainly in Ituri province and has become the deadliest of the country’s 17 Ebola outbreaks.

The situation has been worsened by insecurity, population displacement, large movements of people and a strike by health workers. The World Health Organization has warned that the outbreak remains out of control and could surpass the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa, which killed more than 11,000 people, mainly in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

70,000 vaccine doses approved

The WHO said 70,000 doses of Ervebo had been approved for use in Congo. More than 50,000 doses have already arrived, while another 20,000 doses are being allocated to a clinical trial examining whether the vaccine can provide protection against the Bundibugyo strain.

The current outbreak is caused by Bundibugyo virus, for which there is currently no licensed vaccine or treatment specifically approved for the strain.

Ervebo is being administered under a compassionate-use programme, allowing a medical product to be used in serious disease situations when it has not been specifically approved for the particular strain involved.

Health authorities believe the vaccine could offer some protection because the Bundibugyo and Zaire strains are related. However, researchers have yet to establish how effectively Ervebo can prevent illness caused by the current strain.

Placide Mbala Kingebeni, Africa CDC’s director for research, clinical trials and innovation, said information gathered during the vaccination campaign would help scientists assess the vaccine’s performance.

The campaign is expected to cover 14 health zones across Tshopo, Bas-Uele and Haut-Uele provinces. Kamba has urged health workers to receive the vaccine, saying it could help protect them and reduce the risk of transmission into their communities.

New vaccines under testing

Scientists are also working on vaccines specifically targeting Bundibugyo virus. The University of Oxford’s Vaccine Group and Moderna have begun human trials of new candidates.

Both programmes are currently in Phase I, where researchers assess safety, tolerability and the immune response generated by the vaccines.

The combined vaccination and research effort is intended to provide immediate protection for those most exposed to the outbreak while generating evidence that could help deliver a targeted vaccine for future Bundibugyo outbreaks.
