Dozens of Walkie-Talkies Explode Across Lebanon Amid Rising Tensions
Dozens of walkie-talkies exploded across Lebanon on Wednesday, just one day after a series of blasts targeting Hezbollah members left thousands injured, according to a security source who spoke with CNN.
Preliminary reports indicated between 15 to 20 explosions occurred in Beirut’s southern suburbs, with a similar number of blasts reported in southern Lebanon. These areas are known to be strongholds of the militant group Hezbollah.
The Lebanese Army issued a warning on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), urging citizens to avoid gathering in areas affected by the explosions. “The Army Command asks citizens not to gather in areas witnessing security incidents to allow the arrival of medical teams,” the post stated.
Hezbollah Blames Israel for Pager Explosions
The walkie-talkie explosions come just a day after Hezbollah accused Israel of orchestrating an attack that resulted in multiple deaths and thousands of injuries. On Tuesday, hundreds of pagers carried by Hezbollah members exploded almost simultaneously across Lebanon. The blasts led to widespread chaos and injuries, with Lebanon’s Health Minister Firass Abiad confirming that at least 200 people were in critical condition.
The militant group has vowed to retaliate against what it described as an Israeli “security operation.” Hezbollah has long warned its members against carrying mobile phones or other communication devices, citing concerns about Israeli tracking and surveillance. The explosions have fueled existing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel, with daily clashes reported in recent weeks.
Rising Tensions Between Lebanon and Israel
The explosions are occurring against the backdrop of heightened tensions between Lebanon and Israel. For more than 11 months, Hezbollah and Israeli forces have been engaged in near-daily clashes, with hundreds killed on both sides. These hostilities intensified following the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, which sparked a full-scale war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza. Since then, Hezbollah has ramped up its attacks on Israel, with the two sides exchanging fire almost daily.
Israel has made it clear that its military operations aim to curb Hezbollah’s activities in northern Lebanon, allowing residents in the area to return home. However, the ongoing conflict continues to force tens of thousands of people to evacuate from both sides of the border.
The walkie-talkie explosions mark yet another escalation in the conflict, as both Hezbollah and Israel brace for what could become an even larger confrontation.
