Russian Airstrike Devastates Residential Building in Kharkiv, Killing Three and Injuring Dozens
A Russian airstrike has partially destroyed a residential building in Kharkiv, Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least three people and leaving nearly 30 others injured. The strike targeted a building that was under repair after a previous attack, which had aimed to restore it to full habitability ahead of the approaching winter season.
According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the building’s central section collapsed due to the force of the strike. Images and videos shared across social media revealed the extensive damage to the large apartment block, with rescue operations ongoing. Local authorities fear more people remain trapped under the debris.
Oleh Syniehubov, the regional governor of Kharkiv, confirmed that the attack involved a glide bomb and described the severity of the situation in a post on Telegram. “One of the multi-story buildings suffered a direct hit. The rescue operation continues,” Syniehubov wrote. Emergency services were on the scene, working to extract survivors from the wreckage.
This latest attack coincides with intense fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces in the nearby town of Vovchansk, a strategically important location in the Kharkiv border region. The Ukrainian military is attempting to reclaim a processing plant that has been under Russian control for the past four months. The facility, which comprises around 30 buildings and includes steel structures, has been a focal point for Russian forces since May, as part of a broader effort to stretch Ukrainian defenses.
Ukrainian Military Intelligence announced on Tuesday that their units had retaken the Vovchansk plant following fierce hand-to-hand combat. “Our forces fought in densely built-up conditions to recapture the facility,” the statement read. The recapture of the plant underscores Ukraine’s determination to hold the northeastern front amid ongoing Russian aggression.
Meanwhile, the town of Vuhledar, located in the Donetsk region, remains under significant pressure. Ukrainian officials report that Russian forces are bombarding the town with glide bombs, while advancing infantry units are attempting to encircle the area. Andrii Kovalenko, head of Ukraine’s Centre for Combating Disinformation, noted that Vuhledar is one of the key strongholds in the region and warned of a potential escalation as Russian forces intensify their assault.
As Ukraine continues its defensive efforts, the humanitarian toll of the conflict mounts, with civilian areas frequently targeted by Russian airstrikes. The situation remains critical as rescue workers continue to search for survivors in the aftermath of the Kharkiv strike.
