Private Yacht Wreckage in Italy Sparks Concerns Over Encrypted Data and International Interest
The sunken yacht of British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, which sank off the coast of Sicily, is raising alarms over the possible retrieval of highly classified information stored on the vessel. The yacht, which rests 50 meters (164 feet) underwater, is believed to contain watertight safes with two super-encrypted hard drives that hold sensitive data, including passcodes and classified information. Salvage operations are underway, but officials fear that foreign governments, including Russia and China, may try to access the wreck.
Lynch, a former adviser to British prime ministers David Cameron and Theresa May on cyber security, died when his yacht sank in a storm. His 18-year-old daughter Hannah, American attorney Chris Morvillo, his wife Neda, British banker Jonathan Bloomer, and the yacht’s chef Recaldo Thomas were among the seven victims who perished in the tragedy. Fifteen others, including Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, survived the incident.
Italian authorities, concerned about potential theft of valuable items or sensitive data, have bolstered security around the wreckage with both surface and underwater surveillance. Francesco Venuto, from the Sicilian Civil Protection Agency, confirmed that additional security measures have been implemented until the yacht is raised.
Initial investigations revealed that Morvillo and Bloomer likely died from suffocation due to an air pocket running out of oxygen in a sleeping cabin. The chef, Thomas, died from drowning, while autopsy results for Lynch and his daughter remain unclear.
Authorities are also scrutinizing the circumstances leading to the yacht’s sinking, which occurred within 16 minutes of the storm hitting. The vessel lacked a traditional black box or voyage data recorder, but investigators have retrieved hard drives and surveillance footage from the navigation system, which they hope will shed light on the cause of the disaster.
Lynch’s yacht was reportedly equipped with secure compartments for his data drives. Survivors told investigators that Lynch, who was acquitted in a US fraud case earlier this year, did not trust cloud services and always kept sensitive data onboard. The cruise had been organized to celebrate Lynch’s acquittal in the case related to the takeover of his software company, Autonomy, by Hewlett Packard.
The sinking coincided with the death of Lynch’s business partner Stephen Chamberlain, who was also involved in the US fraud case. Chamberlain died in a separate incident on the same day, adding to the tragic series of events surrounding the shipwreck.
As investigations continue, efforts to raise the yacht will be closely monitored to prevent environmental damage and ensure that no sensitive data falls into the wrong hands.
