Man Arrested in Essen for Allegedly Setting Fires and Driving Van into Shops, Injuring 30
A man has been arrested in connection with two fires that injured 30 people and a subsequent van attack in the western German city of Essen, authorities said on Sunday.
The incidents unfolded late Saturday afternoon when emergency services were called to two residential building fires shortly after 5 p.m. The fires left 30 people injured, including eight children, two of whom are in life-threatening condition due to severe smoke inhalation.
When firefighters arrived at the scene of the first fire, smoke was pouring from the building’s entrance, with residents frantically calling for help from upper-floor windows. Neighbors attempted to assist by using ladders to help residents escape, but the ladders were not long enough to reach higher floors. Firefighters worked quickly to evacuate the building and extinguish the flames.
Shortly after the fires, a van reportedly drove into two shops in Essen, causing significant property damage but fortunately no injuries. The suspect allegedly then threatened people nearby with weapons, but several men in the area managed to fend him off using shovels and poles, restraining him until police arrived.
Authorities have arrested a 41-year-old man, identified as a Syrian national and resident of Essen, in connection with the incidents. The police are investigating the motive behind the attacks.
According to Germany’s Press Agency, the man’s lawyer, Volker Schröder, stated that the attacks were not politically motivated. Schröder described the events as a “purely tragic family story,” linking them to an ongoing dispute with the man’s wife over custody of their children. The lawyer also suggested that a possible mental health condition may have played a role in the man’s actions.
The investigation into the fires and van attack is ongoing as authorities continue to gather evidence and interview witnesses. Meanwhile, the injured individuals, including the critically wounded children, are receiving treatment at local hospitals.
This shocking series of events has left the Essen community reeling, with residents expressing concern for the injured victims and seeking answers about what led to the attacks. Local authorities have not yet confirmed additional details about the suspect’s background or mental health, but more information is expected in the coming days as the investigation progresses.
