Widespread Sexual Harassment in Healthcare: Study Reveals Alarming Trends
A recent study published in the Internal Medicine Journal has highlighted a concerning issue in the healthcare sector—widespread sexual harassment faced by doctors, nurses, and medical staff. This form of abuse often goes unreported, overshadowed by other forms of workplace aggression like violence and verbal attacks. The study indicates that up to 45% of physicians have experienced sexual harassment, ranging from inappropriate comments to repeated interactions with patients.
The research, which reviewed data from seven countries including the UK, US, and Australia, involved over 18,000 doctors and found that healthcare workers are particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment due to the intimate nature of patient interactions. According to Caroline Kamau-Mitchell, the study’s lead author, healthcare professionals are at higher risk because patient examinations often involve physical contact and personal discussions. “Health workers are more at risk than people in other professions,” Kamau-Mitchell told Euronews Health.
Emergency room and psychiatric doctors, who frequently deal with high-stress patients, are more likely to face harassment, the study noted. General practitioners also face risks, particularly because they build long-term relationships with patients and often see them in less supervised settings. Dr. Tiago Villanueva, president of the European Union of General Practitioners, stated, “Some patients may abuse that trust.”
The study revealed a gender divide, with 52% of female healthcare workers reporting sexual harassment, compared to 34% of men. Kamau-Mitchell attributed this disparity to societal norms and sexism in patient-doctor relationships, noting that male doctors are often expected to tolerate inappropriate behavior.
Sexual harassment in healthcare remains underreported in many countries, but recent data from the UK highlights the scale of the problem. A 2021 survey of UK doctors found that nearly 32% had experienced unwanted, gender-related comments, while National Health Service (NHS) staff reported over 21,000 cases of sexual harassment, assault, and stalking between 2017 and 2022.
The issue has only worsened with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Paul de Raeve, secretary general of the European Federation of Nursing Associations. He warned that the rise in aggression, including sexual harassment, is leading to a drop in job satisfaction and could prompt more healthcare workers to leave the profession. “We are going to lose our nurses … because they’ve said, ‘enough is enough,’” de Raeve said.
Experts agree that addressing sexual harassment in healthcare will require systemic changes. Recommendations include installing panic alarms, equipping doctors with body cameras, and improving training on how to handle harassment. “We need to realise that we can’t just leave people to deal with problems on their own,” Kamau-Mitchell concluded.
